When properly applied acrylic topcoat will prevent tarnishing and oxidation of leaf with a low gold content such as 12k 18k silver copper imitation and variegated leaf.
Remember to coat your hands with either cotton gloves or a layer of talcum powder when handling the gold leaf and this will minimise the risk of tarnishing on the new layer and then always a layer of varnish over the top.
